BASIC FOUNDATION HAND WORKSHOP

SATURDAYS, MAY 19TH AND JUNE 2ND

9:30-4:30, lunch noon-1:00

ALICIA MCKIM, INSTRUCTOR

During the Arts and Crafts movement calligrapher and typographer Edward Johnston wanted to design a contemporary calligraphic hand based on medieval manuscripts. He eventually chose the Ramsey Psalter, an English Carolingian manuscript from the 10th-century as his model. The contemporary appearance and energetic character of Foundational makes it enjoyable to write and gives this script practical and creative use today. In this workshop students will take a fresh look at the main characteristics of Foundational while exploring what gives this hand its strength and liveliness. This class is for beginning students as well as more experienced calligraphers who want to learn the Foundational hand.
